Summer 2024 Internship

Matheson Oyster Company is looking for positive and self-motivated individuals who are interested in spending their summer at an oyster company. Working on an oyster farm requires hard work, diligence, and an easy-going temperament; if you get gratification from working with your hands, this would be a great fit for you. No previous experience in shellfish necessary; we are interested in applicants of all backgrounds - not just the sciences.

 

Over the course of the summer, you will:

 

  • Gain experience and understand farming technique of longline and floating oyster gear

  • Learn how to take care of oyster seed and nursery best practices

  • Assist with general maintenance and upkeep of the farm and facility

  • Participate in harvesting process

  • Participate in post-harvest process and order fulfillment

 

Qualifications:

 

  • You must be able to work flexible morning hours to accommodate the tide schedule.

  • You are comfortable working in inclement outdoor conditions and in an indoor refrigerated environment.

  • You are comfortable being in and near the water, as well as in a boat setting.

  • This is a physically demanding active job which at times involves extended periods of repetitive and strenuous work.

  • Applicants should be able to lift and handle 25 pounds without difficulty.

  • Individuals must adhere to all safety standards, including proper use of personal protective equipment and sun-protective measures.

  • Applicants must have reliable transportation to and from work.

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

Compensation: $15/hour

 

When and Where: We’re looking for a two or three month long committment beginning no later than May 20, 2024. Expected hours of work are 30 per week. Start times will be variable, but between 7-9am. Work will take place at Matheson Oyster Co. facility at 3471 Browns Bay Rd in Hayes, VA.

 

Work Environment Risk Exposure: Work environment includes exposure to heat and cold of indoor and outdoor environment; risk associated with work in the Mobjack Bay; water craft; sharp knives and barnacles (cut risk); loud noise; risk associated with lifting, mechanical machinery, wet or uneven ground surfaces.

Additional Considerations: Our company values sun protection and making sure our interns are taking all precautions necessary. We provide each intern with a long sleeve SPF shirt (for you to keep); large brim sun hats are also available to use at the start of each work day.
